It was an exciting finale to the 2025 Provincial Women’s Singles Championship today at the St. Mary’s Lawn Bowls Club. After a hard fought round robin between 12 women’s bowlers from across our member clubs- it came down to a grand finale in the medal rounds at 3pm today. Congratulations to Vicki Balcom on winning this year’s championship in a 21-9 win over Mayumi Endo in the final. As well, congratulations to Ann Marie Siteman who won the bronze in a 21-13 win over Nancy Sinclair. Great job everyone! Thanks to everyone who volunteered at St. Mary’s for putting on a great event. Up next on the LBNS Schedule next weekend, we have a double header of action with the Joe Tidd Memorial Open Triples in Bridgetown on Saturday followed by the Annual LBNS Celebration Bowls and Barbeque at Wanderers (if you want to participate- connect with your home club). It was a great weekend of lawn bowls action this weekend at the Dartmouth Lawn Bowls Club as they hosted the 2025 Provincial Men’s Singles Championship. 10 top men’s players from across our member clubs took to the greens for their chance at the top men’s individual title in our association. After the round robin, the top 6 advanced to the playoff rounds: Steve Ogden (1st: 3-0, +43), Mark Mullane (2nd: 3-0, +27), John Siteman (3rd: 3-0, +25), Grahame Usher (4th: 2-1, +7), Kevin Stewart (5th: 1-2, -3) and Terry O’Neil (6th: 1-2, -5). The quarterfinals round (the battle of the Team Nova Scotia National 5-a-Side Team) was played Sunday morning with John Siteman defeating Terry O’Neil (21-5) and Kevin Stewart defeating Grahame Usher (21-9). In the semifinals, it was wins by both Steve Ogden and Mark Mullane to set up the finals matchups. In the Finals, the championship game would feature Steve Ogden vs. Mark Mullane while the third place game featured John Siteman vs. Kevin Stewart. In the championship game full of lots of big time shots for the lawn bowls fans in attendance, Steve Ogden had a quick start to jump out to a 11-5 lead after 10 ends. Then it was Mark Mullane who staged quite the comeback- outscoring Ogden 11-6 to get the margin to 17-16. In the end, it was a 3 in the 22nd end to get Ogden over the line to take out the title once again. In the 3rd place game, it was a strong performance from both John Siteman and Kevin Stewart with lots of great shots throughout the match. With some strong draw play to kick off the game, Siteman jumped out to a 15-3 lead after 10. The next four ends were a strong comeback with great shots from Stewart to the delight of the Bedford fans who came to cheer him on. In the end, it was a trail of the Jack for 2 in the 17th end to get Siteman over the line and onto the podium once again. Thanks to the Dartmouth Lawn Bowls Club for hosting a great Provincial Men’s Singles Championship- including Match Chair Debby Purdy, umpires Joan MacDonald, Gordon Foster, Vicki Balcom and Jackie Foster, the markers, the kitchen crew, the maintenance crew and all the many other volunteers who helped make the event a success. Up next on the LBNS Provincial Calendar, the Women take to the greens of the St. Mary’s Lawn Bowls Club for the 2025 Provincial Women’s Singles Championship next weekend (September 20-21). If you haven’t gotten your entry in yet- make sure to do so ASAP as the deadline is tonight! If you’re not playing, make sure to get over to St. Mary’s to cheer on the players as they go for gold! It was golden day in Saint John for Team Nova Scotia as they captured the Sid Currie Memorial Trophy in a dominating performance at the 2025 Atlantic Bowls Championship. Going into the day in medal contention in all four events, the team finished off with a 4-2-2 record against Quebec in the final two sessions to cap off the weekend with a strong 30-14-4 overall record and taking out all four gold medal titles! This mark’s Nova Scotia’s 27th Sid Currie Memorial Trophy title at the Atlantic Bowls Championship (since it was first awarded in 1984) and a successful defence of their title won last year in Dartmouth. In the Men’s Pairs, the gold medal went to Ian MacDonald and Jim Granville who finished off the weekend with a 4-1-1 record. The Wanderers based duo had a strong performance all weekend and capped it off with a nailbiting 12-10 win over Quebec B’s Jean-Rene Leduc and Marco Veillieux to clinch the top position. Our B representatives Gerald Hackenschmidt and Tim Jackson of Bridgetown finished out the weekend in 6th Place after a 9-9 tie in the final session against Quebec A’s Andy Wepruk and Jonathan Knight. In the Women’s Pairs, it was two medals for Team Nova Scotia as the Wanderers duo of Lindsay LeFresne and Patti Granville captured the Gold Medal with a strong 5-1 weekend while the Dartmouth duo of Ann Marie Siteman and Vicki Balcom took home the bronze medal with a 4-1-1 record. Both teams had strong performances throughout the division setting themselves up for medal finishes going into Day 3. For LeFresne and Granville, it was a tight 13-11 decision over Quebec A’s Muffin Hoodspith and Gail Routley which booked their Gold Medal berth while Siteman and Balcom finished off with a nailbiting 8-8 tie against Quebec B’s Johanne DuCap and Dee Conroy to cap off the weekend in 3rd Place. In the Men’s Triples, it was another Gold Medal for the Wanderers based trio of Steve Ogden, Rick Fry and Grahame Usher who took out the title in Saint John with a strong 5-1 record. Going into Sunday, the team was an undefeated 5-0 but dropped a tight 9-6 decision to Quebec A’s John Devlin Mike Doskas and Gilles Cayer. However, the better aggregate score at the end of the round robin propelled Team Nova Scotia into the top position. Our Nova Scotia A team of Dave Veinot, Steve Bezanson and Mike Stewart fought through some adversity and finished off the weekend with an 11-7 win over Quebec B’s Venance Basque, Benoit Vezina and Andre Beauchesne to finish 2-4 on the weekend. In the Women’s Triples, it was a two medal day for Team Nova Scotia with a return to the top of the podium as Tammy Foster-Veinot, Jackie Foster and Lorraine Bezanson (Bridgetown and Wanderers) as the trio took out a strong Gold Medal win with a 5-0-1 record for the weekend. With their only blemish being a tie earlier in the round robin, it was a strong 13-8 win in the final session over Quebec A’s Anne-Marie Belanger, Diane Dolan and Addie Petronko which booked Team Nova Scotia another trip to the top of the podium. With the bronze medal, it was the Dartmouth based trio of Cathy Mills, Mayumi Endo and Kelly Moore who capped off the weekend with a final 3-3 record to take out the bronze on aggregate. Congratulations to all of our members of Team Nova Scotia on representing the province with pride and putting on a great showing on and off the greens. Thanks to the Seaside Lawn Bowls Club, the host committee, the volunteers, the officials and everyone who helped put on an outstanding showcase of lawn bowls in Eastern Canada. Looking forward to next year as the event heads back to Quebec. |
