Foster, Condran & Horne Win DLBC Early Bird Mixed Triples Title

It was an exciting day on the green at the Dartmouth Lawn Bowls Club as they held their annual Early Bird Mixed Triples as the kickoff to the 2022 Competitive Bowls season in Nova Scotia! They were excited to host a full field of 16 teams to battle it out in Singles, Pairs and Triples play. Congratulations to Gordon Foster, Vivian Condran and Sue Ellen Horne (all three of them from the Dartmouth Club) who went 5-1 to capture this year’s title! Thanks to DLBC Club Match Chair Vicki Balcom and her team for organizing a great event for bowlers across Nova Scotia. Hope to see you all on the greens at this event again next year! Up next on our competitive schedule for 2022, we'll be headed back to Dartmouth next weekend for our second event of the season, the Provincial Triples Championship.

LBNS Announces Launch of Bluenose Bowls Academy

Lawn Bowls Nova Scotia is establishing “The Bluenose Bowls Academy” high-performance program to the benefit of all LBNS members.
The foundation elements of this initiative are to build a bowls’ performance program, which includes the development of coaches, the training of athletes following the Bowls Canada LTAD model, and coaching for excellence in performance.
Today’s announcement is an invitation for athletes who are interested in a program that supports regular practice and play, and continuous recording of all practice and competition results, for personal performance and skill development leading to excellence.
Program Goals
A key goal of “The Bluenose Bowls Academy” is that athletes are able to train at their own clubs as much as possible, ever-striving to learn and improve on their personal best, “NEVER SETTLING” for less effort or result.
The Academy aims to create a structure specifically offering services to develop and maximize the potential, for coaches, umpires and especially players seeking to seriously enter, commit and succeed at the elite level.
Training Team
The coach-driven training squad, “Bluenose Bowls Academy”, for those who have the passion and perseverance, will be supported by Coaching Lead Kathy Myketyn, N.S. Head Coach Terry O’Neil, a coaching consultant and the LBNS Coaching pool.
Objectives include:

Setting (higher) standards of development to benefit Nova Scotia bowlers.
Providing practical training programs to develop skills to elite level.
Creating tactical, mental skill development programs for coaches, bowlers.
Initiating the best use of IT for the sport.
Identifying and liaising with all Nova Scotia clubs to exchange ‘best practice’ approaches to continue to improve the standing of the clubs.

Benefits include:

Increase participants in bowls, especially female and youth.
Market an integrated approach to delivering the sport of bowls.
‘Train the Trainer’ programs for the coaches and umpires.
Athlete talent identification for resources and programs.

Regional benefits might include:

Links with sport science facilities located within the region.
Sport education development.
IT and multimedia development and opportunities.
Cross sport exchanges and programs.

BASELINE SKILL ASSESSMENT:
Each Academy member will create a coach-supervised private baseline skill assessment of the 11 key bowls’ deliveries, played forehand and backhand from the short, medium and long lengths.
Success in each attempt is based on how many draws out of 10 land within a mat length of the target, be it the jack, a bowl or a position on the green.
The results are recorded and challenged in the next delivery audit as athletes strive to improve their personal best score.
Following initial baseline measurements, athletes will engage in regular training sessions, utilizing both block and random form.

Other features will include learning tactics, reading the head, when to attack and defend, position play, the importance of delivery routines, singles and team play, drawing, debriefing, conversion shots, reading the green etc.
Coaches will endeavour to provide immediate feedback through observation and athlete-shared understanding, in some cases using video analysis to improve on or define a goal or focus. A series of training exercises will be introduced for independent practice.

National Bowls Day is an opportunity for clubs to raise their profile within the community and attract new participants to the sport and their programs. Dartmouth LBC & Wanderers LBC Complete Belonging in Bowls Program Level 2

Congratulations to both the Dartmouth Lawn Bowls Club and Wanderers Lawn Bowling Club on completing the first two stages of the Belonging in Bowls Program! The program is a great way for clubs to benefit from national best practices (currently beginning in Safe Sport but expanding in the future to many different sides of club operations). Late Owl Mixed Fours Closes Out 2021 LBNS Competition Season

It was a fun day yesterday at the Bedford Lawn Bowls Club for the final scheduled event of the 2021 season- the Late Owl Mixed Fours! The tournament had teams competing in the event playing 6 Games throughout the day (2 Games of fours and 4 Games of Pairs). Congratulations to the team of Cameron LeFresne, Lindsay LeFresne, Luke Gouthro and Lena Cameron who captured this year’s title. Thanks to Bedford for hosting the event as a great conclusion to the 2021 competitive season here in Nova Scotia.

Bezanson and Balcom win Provincial Singles Titles in Rainy Championship Finale

It was an exciting final day of provincial championship action in Truro as the Provincial Singles Championship came to a close. With lots of exciting matchups throughout the weekend and excellent shotmaking, the games lived up to an exciting billing as a great end to the 2021 Playdown season.
In the Men’s Singles, it was multi time former champion Steve Bezanson who returned to the top of the podium with a 21-16 win over Terry O’Neil in the A Final during the morning draw. During a very rainy lunchtime session, Steve Ogden defeated Terry O’Neil 21-14 in the B final and Mark Robar defeated Keith Finck 21-13 in the C Final.
In the Women’s Singles, the final three played on Sunday to determine the final placings and of course who would be taking the trophy. In the morning semifinal- it was Ann Marie Siteman who advanced to the final with a 21-13 win over Debbie Tower. In the final, it was Siteman’s pairs and fours teammate Vicki Balcom who had a strong performance to pick up the gold medal.
Nova Scotia will be represented at the 2022 Canadian Lawn Bowling Championship in the Men’s Singles by Steve Bezanson (A Winner), Steve Ogden (B Winner) and Mark Robar (C Winner) and in the Women’s Singles by Vicki Balcom (A Winner), Ann Marie Siteman (B Winner), and Debbie Tower (C Winner). Congratulations to all of the winners! Thanks to everyone at Cobequid Lawn Bowls Club who helped put on the event this weekend and to the umpiring crew of Nancy Latimer and Kathy Myketyn who came from the city to umpire throughout the weekend. For the final step on the LBNS Provincial Playdown season, we head back to the Bedford Lawn Bowls Club for the final event of the 2021 Season schedule, the Late Owl Mixed Fours!

Team Nova Scotia competes in 2021 Atlantic Bowls in Fredericton

A belated congratulations to the team of Braeden Campbell, Cameron LeFresne and Mike Stewart- who captured a silver medal in the Men’s Triples competition at the 2021 Atlantic Bowls Championship last weekend in Fredericton. This year’s event featured just Men’s and Women’s Triples due to the uncertainty around provinces being able to hold playdowns in both of the traditional disciplines of the tournament (Pairs and Triples). We had two Women’s Triples teams (Val Bechard/Jeanette Street/Carolyn Reeves and Kathy Myketyn/Carolyn Ulch/Betty MacAlpine) and a New Brunswick team (Lawrence Keegan/Peter McClusky/Yves Martin) that joined us in the Men’s Triples to complete our Team Nova Scotia for this year’s edition. Congratulations to all of our teams on representing Nova Scotia well in an unprecedented edition of the Atlantic Bowls! Congratulations to Quebec on winning this year’s Sid Currie Memorial Trophy title with 3 of the 6 medals (and both gold medals). We look forward to seeing lots of people back competing for the opportunity to represent Nova Scotia at the 2022 Atlantic Bowls in Quebec when the playdowns come next summer! Ogden/Bezanson and Tower/Latimer win Provincial Pairs Titles

It was a hard fought day of bowls that came right down to the last shot for both the Men’s and Women’s Provincial Pairs Championships held this weekend at the Wanderers Lawn Bowls Club. With the second set of spots in the 2022 Canadian Lawn Bowling Championship on the line- the competition was excellent all weekend long on the greens in Downtown Halifax.
In the Women’s Pairs, it was the team of Debbie Tower and Nancy Latimer who came through the B Bracket to win the title defeating defending champions Ann Marie Siteman and Vicki Balcom in two hard fought contests- 18-14 in the 9am session and 16-15 in the afternoon session. The final match came down to the last three shots of the 18th end with excellent final bowls from Latimer and Tower to get the single shot they needed to win the match and the championship.
In the Men’s Pairs, it came right down to the final session of the weekend as Steve Ogden and Steve Bezanson won their 8th Provincial Men’s Pairs Championship together as a team- defeating Rick Fry and Rick Burrows 15-14 in an extra game after a win earlier in the day to force the final round decider. After a strong 5-0 start for the Fry and Burrows combination- it was the former Canadian Pairs winners Ogden and Bezanson who went on a 5 end run to take the lead back. After tight late stages of the game- Fry and Burrows forced their way back into the match with a single in the 17th. Hoping to force the extra end, Fry trailed the Jack back slightly on his second bowl of the final end to sit 2 and a close chance at the three he needed to tie. In the end, a two point end was the final result and a 15-14 win to send Ogden and Bezanson back to the National Championship.
Thanks to Wanderers Lawn Bowls Club for hosting an outstanding Provincial Pairs Championship! The bowls was top notch throughout the weekend. The next stop on the LBNS schedule, we head to the carpet of the Cobequid Lawn Bowls Club for the Provincial Singles Championship- scheduled for September 25th to 26th in Truro.
