It was an exciting day at the St. Mary’s Lawn Bowls Club as we determined our first Provincial Champions of the 2021 season in the Provincial Fours Championship!
In the Men’s Fours, it was the team of Braeden Campbell, Raymond MacDonald, John Siteman and Liam Campbell who went undefeated throughout the weekend to pick up this year’s title with a 4th round win 20-10 over Steve Ogden, Steve Bezanson, Doug McLearn and Phil Balcom. After getting out to a 6-1 lead- Team Ogden went on a 5 point run to tie up the match through 7 ends. After picking up a deuce in the 8th end, Team Campbell went on a 8 point run and after deuces in the 13th and 14th end for Ogden- got 3’s in the final two ends to pick up the victory and a defence of their title for Braeden, Raymond and Liam while a first fours title for John (after previous wins in Men’s Triples in 2018 and Men’s Pairs in 2019).
In the Women’s Fours, it was the Team of Tammy Foster-Veinot, Jackie Foster, Debbie Foster and Lorraine Bezanson who took out this year’s title in a tight clash all throughout Sunday against Lena Cameron, Kate Thompson, Debby Purdy and Carissa Lynch in a rematch of the 2019 final in this year’s edition of the event. In the morning, Team Foster-Veinot pulled off a 13-12 victory to force an extra game in the double knockout event for the title. In the final, it was a tight battle the whole way through as the teams were tied 7-7 after 8 ends of play. In the second half of the match, it was Team Foster-Veinot who pulled ahead with a 7-3 run in the second half to win the title 14-10 victory in the afternoon session. For a few of the members of their squad, it was their 11th Provincial Fours Championship title- showing once again their consistent success in the fours discipline to send them to the National Championships.
Thanks to St. Mary’s Lawn Bowling Club for their great work in putting on this year’s championship. Special thanks to the greens crew who got the green running extremely well for the teams and to the huge crew of umpires who came out to support running the event and ensuring everything was all done up right. Next on our provincial schedule- we head back to the Wanderers Lawn Bowls Club in Halifax for the second part of our Provincial Championships as they host the Provincial Pairs Championship September 11th-12th. Stay tuned as the draw will come out later this week!

For the 2021 Support4Sport Awards, Sport Nova Scotia gave all provincial sport organizations the opportunity to nominate an individual or group who went above and beyond for their sport during the COVID-19 pandemic as recipients of the “Sport Makes a Difference Award.” LBNS is pleased to announce that our recipients for this special honour are Joan MacDonald and Janet Kelly. During the course of the pandemic, Joan and Janet went above and beyond to help get our sport back on the greens- assisting in developing our comprehensive return to play plan, communicating the ever-changing health and safety protocols and expectations with our member clubs and working with all clubs to ensure protocols were adhered to over our 2020 season and into our current bowls season. Congratulations and thank you for all of your hard work to get us back on the greens and ensure members and our communities can enjoy our sport in a safe and healthy environment during these unprecedented times.
